Magic School Bus –

-
Make a list of 10 facts about volcanoes that you
learned from the story.

-
What changes would the author have to make if
she had written this story two hundred years ago?
-
Draw a picture of a volcano and label all its
parts.
-
Could this story have taken place in your city?
Why or why not?
-
Make a volcano with the help of an adult and see
if you can get it to erupt. See the volcano instructions below.
Okay, the baking soda volcano is the kitchen
equivalent of a volcano, not a real one. It's cool all the same! The
baking soda volcano is also more or less non-toxic, which adds to its
appeal.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 30 minutes
What You Need:
· 6
cups flour
· 2
cups salt
· 4
tablespoons cooking oil
· warm water
· plastic soda bottle
· dishwashing detergent
· food coloring
·
vinegar
·
baking dish or other pan
· 2
T baking soda
Here's How:
1. First make the 'cone' of the baking soda
volcano. Mix 6 cups flour, 2 cups salt, 4 tablespoons cooking oil,
and 2 cups of water. The resulting mixture should be smooth and firm
(more water may be added if needed). 2. Stand the soda bottle in the baking pan and mold
the dough around it into a volcano shape. Don't cover the hole or
drop dough into it! 3. Fill the bottle most of the way full with warm
water and a bit of red food color (can be done before sculpting if
you don't take so long that the water gets cold). 4. Add 6 drops of detergent to the bottle contents.
5. Add 2 tablespoons baking soda to the liquid. 6. Slowly pour vinegar into the bottle. Watch out -
eruption time! Tips: The cool red
lava is the result of a chemical reaction between the baking soda and
vinegar. In this reaction, carbon dioxide gas is produced, which is
also present in real volcanoes. As the carbon dioxide gas is produced,
pressure builds up inside the plastic bottle, until the gas bubbles
(thanks to the detergent) out of the 'volcano'. Adding a bit of yellow
food coloring too will result in lovely red-orange lava!

pilgrim?
-
Act like you are Molly and keep a journal.
Write down things that are making you happy here in America and write
down what is making you sad.
-
Create your own pilgrim. You can use whatever
supplies you would like to make this pilgrim. You could also invite
some of your friends over to make pilgrims and Indians. Create
pretend food and re-enact the first thanksgiving. If you need to
know more about the first thanksgiving before doing these activities
read the following book --- Pilgrim's First Thanksgiving by
Ann Mcgovern.

The Time Machine
-
Why did the Time Traveler create a time machine?
-
Did he go into the past or the future?
-
Create a make believe time machine. Be
creative. You could make it out of boxes, wood, a tent, etc.
-
Make believe you go into the future like the
Time Traveler. Write a post card to your friends and let them know
about what you are encountering in the future.
-
In your trip to the future, act like you run
into Weena. Ask Weena why she is so scared of the Murlocks and
record your discoveries on paper.
-
While you are in your time machine, act like it
malfunctions. You cannot get back to the present. Make up a new
chapter to the story about where you end up instead of back in the
present. How are you feeling? Who do you see? What year do you end
up in?
-
Would you want to truly go into the past or
future if it was possible? What time would you like to go to and
why?
